ポッドキャストの配信には、音声や動画などのファイルをアップロードするためのデータ置き場と、そのファイルとポッドキャストを紐付けるフィード（RSS）の生成が必要になります。そのシステムを自力で構築する事も可能ですが、それにはある程度の知識／お金／時間が必要になるためちょっとハードルが高い。そこで登場するのが「ホスティング・サーヴィス」。ポッドキャスト配信に必要なインフラを（有料または無料で）提供してくれるありがたいサーヴィスです。

実際には、この表に掲載されていない同様のサーヴィスがいくつか存在しますが、おそらくここにある15個のサーヴィスは、アップルが考える一定の基準を満たしている‥‥という事なのでしょう。かつては、日本だけでも数社のブログサーヴィスが、ポッドキャストのホスティングに対応していましたが、寂しい事に今では「Seesaa」だけになってしまいました。
この表にあるほとんどのサーヴィスは有料で、配信できるデータ容量など、条件によっていくつかの料金プランが提供されています。国内唯一となった「Seesaa ブログ」も、僕が使っているのは無料プランですが、有料のコースを選ぶ事もできます。それはさておき、この表を見ていて「Whooshkaa」という見慣れない名前に目がとまりました。どう発音すればいいのか全く見当も付きませんが、オーストラリアのサーヴィスだそうです。さっそくサイトに飛んで調べてみると、なんと無料！ しかも１ファイルあたり300MBまでアップ可能。とあります。今どき珍しいほどの気前の良さです。
ちょうど僕は最近「長尺音声が配信可能な無料のホスティング・サーヴィス」を探していたところだったので、まさに「飛んで火に入る夏の虫‥‥ビンゴ！」な気分で、さっそくアカウントを申請したのであります。
